TOP SALES OF THE WEEK 21/2020

Last week picks accidentally combine again Porsche with Italian motoring history. Just with very different cars. And also, repeatedly two cars are based in the USA, one in Italy.

1. TOP SALE OF THE WEEK – Porsche 356A Coupe (1957)

The first pick is a classic Porsche 356A Coupe. It could be also a nice battle between two 356A Coupe in the same original color, Meissen Blue, one driver with a non-matching engine and the other one a complete project car with a matching engine, both sold in the last week. The results were quite similar, just as it was on the same online auction platform Bring a Trailer, we could not use it for the Battle of the auction platforms and in the column TOP Sales of the week, we decided to pick only the „winner“. We would go for the little cheaper 356A Coupe from 1957, a great looking driver, just with a non-matching, but with a period correct 1959 356A engine. We prefer this one, because you do not have to invest significantly more into the car and you can enjoy it right away, drive it on many classic car‘s events throughout the world. It was sold for 70.350 USD including fees on 12 of May, a little over 5 percent cheaper than the matching numbers project, which was sold again a little accidentally for 70.356 USD excluding fees (=the little over 5 % difference). We have also to note this car remained unsold in an auction in February 2016 by Silverstone Auctions with an estimate of 55.000 to 65.000 GBP (=77.000 to 91.000 USD). (auction link)

2. TOP SALE OF THE WEEK – Alfa Romeo Spider Duetto (1967)

The second car of the last week is a 1967 Alfa Romeo Spider Duetto. The 1.570 ccm was the initial displacement for the first generation of the new Alfa Spider which replaced the lovely Giulietta Spider. Only the first generation with the round rear is the one and only classic spider for many, including us. 13.678 first generation Spiders were produced, only 6.324 of the initial Spider 1600s. It is a really classic driver, ideal for summer drives in the country, alone or even better in a duet. And also the US nickname of the car „The Graduate“ reminds us that we would sometimes like to feel the same like Dustin Hoffman, when he drove this car to get the love of his life. This red one example in a very good condition was sold for a great price of 26.775 USD including fees, again on the US platform Bring a Trailer on 13th of May. (auction link)

3. TOP SALE OF THE WEEK – Fiat 509A Torpedo (1929)

And the third pick goes into the deep history with a Fiat 509A Torpedo from 1929. Although some 90.000 were produced, only a fraction of this survived until today. The 509A Torpedo shares the same chassis with the S for Sport, the Mille Miglia model, that won its class three times in a row in the years 1927 to 1929 and in the last year they took the first seven places in their class. But also the 509A did great in racing and won the Monte Carlo Rally in 1928. So a great pre-war racing provenance although with a very small 990 ccm displacement. This car comes also with its original engine, which is even rarer in these days. The car has been restored into a great condition for over a 90 years old veteran. And there was a great opportunity to get this car quite cheaply, because the seller from Italy took a huge risk selling the car at No Reserve in a quite expensive (with 9 % buyer’s premium) and even not car specialized online auction platform Catawiki. Also here luckily for the seller the car was in such great condition, it has found a lot of bidders even over there. But the result on 17th of May was still a very good purchase for the new owner at 27.032 EUR including fees. (auction link)
